The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency in charge of efforts to promote the behavioral health of the nation. One of its responsibilities is the supervision of opioid rehabilitation programs, which are centers which provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Medications given are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs that help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid addicted people. An opioid rehab facility can get their basic certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment facilities accredited by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehabilitation program is certified, they need to get re-certified each year or every three years depending on the kind of accreditation it has been given.
