Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Urania, LA.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Urania which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
