The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. One of its duties is the supervision of opioid treatment facilities, which are centers that provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are in the midst of opioid dependency and addiction. Medicine prescribed are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs that stop curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid addicted individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment centers in Washington are programs who are legally permitted to distribute the medicines used in MAT as long as they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also receive auxiliary services aside from medication such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid treatment center can receive basic approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment facilities accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid rehab center is approved to operate, it must be re-certified each year or every 3 years contingent upon the kind of certification that was granted.
