Medicaid is an insurance program for low-income families that because of the Affordable Care Act must provide insurance coverage for standard drug and alcohol treatment. Medicaid is currently the single largest payer for mental health services in the U.S., and is starting to play a significant role in the reimbursements of drug and alcohol rehabilitation services. Medicaid holders may want to consider that while this is the case, not all rehab programs accept Medicaid. At facilities which do take Medicaid, individuals won't have co-payments in most states. For states which do charge co-pays, there are limits to the out-of-pocket expenses for subscribers. Services covered by Medicaid include screenings, intervention, medication maintenance, counseling, detox, inpatient, outpatient, long-term residential and mental health services.

If someone in Boston is interested in getting Medicaid to pay for treatment, they must fulfill the following guidelines: 1) Be over 65 years of age or under 19 years of age 2) be pregnant or a parent and 3) fall within a specified income bracket.
