Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - East Freetown, MA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in East Freetown which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
