Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - West Falmouth, MA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in West Falmouth which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
