One of the outpatient rehabilitation options for clients in DHS who are battling with opioid dependence and addiction is called opioid maintenance therapy. Some clinics and doctors are certified to dispense certain medications to opioid addicted people, many of which are opioids themselves and are habit forming. With low enough amounts however, the individual doesn't experience being high but also does not have acute cravings and is not in opioid withdrawal. Methadone is the first medication used for this purpose, but there are other choices to pick from.
Methadone is an opiate and is meant to be taken at an out-patient clinic certified to administer the med, that is taken daily in liquid or pill form. The cost of the med is around $150 a month. Buprenorphine is also an opiate based drug, and is in pill form often taken every other day. But unlike Methadone which can only be administered in highly structured medical centers, Buprenorphine can be prescribed and administered in doctor's offices. The cost monthly of buprenorphine is about three hundred dollars /month for the generic of the med. There is also a version of buprenorphine that contains naloxone, that is a drug that blocks the effects of opioids. An individual taking this formulation, also known as Suboxone, would find it harder to get high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It is also taken every day, and is priced about $450 /month. Naltrexone is an additional drug used in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other drugs mentioned it's an opiate blocker and isn't an opioid. A person has the choice to take this medication as a monthly injection, which is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, it prevents someone from feeling high from opioids, and in turn lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily shot costs anywhere from $1000 to $1200 /month.
