Alcohol and drug abuse facilities for Military Veterans are central for the mental well-being and overall stability of Vets of all branches of the armed forces. Because substance abuse and other mental health disorders are found at above average rates among Veterans, it is important that Veterans get the essential assistance they need because of such high suicide rates also associated with these disorders among Veterans.

Substance abuse programs for Veterans in DHS are available through the VA, with services that include programs to handle associated problems such as relationship problems, irritability, disturbed sleep, pain, depression, and/or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which most commonly trigger addiction disorders among Vets. Rehabilitation for substance abuse and associated problems among Military Veterans includes psychotherapies and group and individual therapy which can increase a person's desire to change. Involvement in outside support such as AA and other support groups is encouraged. Medications can also be available in some circumstances to help Vets lessen their drug, alcohol and tobacco use.

Alcohol and drug abuse programs for Veterans are offered during the evening and weekend hours, with both residential and outpatient options available. Facilities that are gender-specific and those for homeless Military Veterans are available in certain areas.
