Smoking Allowed in Designated Area - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Marion Station, MD.

It is estimated that around 75% of clients at residential rehabilitation programs for drug and alcohol addiction are smokers. While it is a fact that nicotine is addicting and clients in any sort of treatment for addiction should endeavor to be free from all addictive substances, this can introduce problems that make enforcing a smoking ban outweigh the advantages of such restrictions. A person who is addicted to a substance as life threatening as drugs and alcohol might not go to treatment if they must quit smoking cigarettes, so many facilities in Marion Station allow smoking with some limitations, restrictions and in designated areas of their facility.

Some programs permit clients to smoke anywhere, as long as it is outside for example. Some facilities have a designated smoking area, and this is the only area that clients are allowed to smoke in. Because nicotine is addictive, even rehab centers that allow smoking usually introduce alternatives to smoking if the client would like to consider this as an option, such as nicotine replacement gum, patches and prescriptions. There are also programs which allow smoking in designated areas, but educate clients on the health risks associated with smoking by including this into their program either by way of direct one on one counseling or by offering educational literature for clients to consider. In facilities which allow smoking in designated areas this is sometimes only approved for clients, and staff are sometimes restricted from smoking at the facility or are encouraged to not smoke in front of clients.

Publicly funded drug treatment centers are bound by the rules and restrictions in regards to smoking that are enforced by state and federal agencies which oversee and administer these programs. Private rehabilitation programs have a little more leeway and don't have as many rules imposed on them, so may be more likely to provide designated areas for smoking.
