Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Trappe, MD.

There are programs available in or near Trappe that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are dispensed in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opioid dependent client will ideally not engage in addict behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also making them feel high. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to treat the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do provide a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
