Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Bristol, ME.

There are addiction programs offered in or near Bristol that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will instead not engage in addict behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications consistently so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond this and the primary treatment objective is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do deliver a limited amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
