Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Danforth, ME.

There are addiction programs offered in or near Danforth which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will instead not engage in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't also causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond this and the primary treatment objective is to treat the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do provide a small amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary services, and this is encouraged.
