Methadone is an opiate and can be taken at an outpatient medical center certified to dispense the drug, which is taken on a daily basis as a pill or liquid. The price of the drug is about $150 monthly. Buprenorphine is also an opioid based drug, and is a pill often taken every other day. But different from Methadone which is only be administered in highly structured medical centers, Buprenorphine can be and is prescribed and dispensed in doctor's offices. The monthly cost of buprenorphine is approximately three hundred dollars /month for the generic of the drug. There is also a version of buprenorphine that contains naloxone, which is a drug which reverses the effects of opiates. An individual taking this version of the drug, also known as Suboxone, would find it harder to get high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It is also taken daily, and costs approximately $450 monthly. Naltrexone is another drug used in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other medications mentioned here it's an opioid blocker and is not an opioid. There is an option to take this medication as a monthly injection, and that is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, it prevents a person from experience being high from opioids, and therefore lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily injection costs anywhere from $1000 to $1200 a month.
