Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Dover Foxcroft, ME.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Dover Foxcroft that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
