Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - East Newport, ME.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in East Newport which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build the sober life you want.
