Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - East Parsonsfield, ME.

There are programs available in or near East Parsonsfield which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs which are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will ideally not engage in addict behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do provide a small amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
