Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Jay, ME.

There are substance abuse programs available in or near Jay which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are administered in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opiate addicted client will ideally no longer become involved in addict behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond this and the main treatment goal is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do offer a small amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
