Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Kingman, ME.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Kingman which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug-free life you want.
