Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Lincolnville Center, ME.

There are addiction programs offered in or near Lincolnville Center which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same nerve cell receptors that cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so that an opioid dependent client will ideally no longer become involved in addict behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time causing them to feel high. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond this and the primary treatment objective is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do provide a small amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary services, and it is encouraged.
