Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Long Island, ME.

There are recovery programs offered in or near Long Island which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are used in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opioid dependent client will ideally not become involved in addict behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time making them feel high. Euphoria occurs at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond this and the main treatment goal is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do provide a small amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary treatment, and this is encouraged.
