Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Northeast Harbor, ME.

There are programs offered in or near Northeast Harbor that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are used in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so that an opioid addicted client will instead no longer become involved in addict behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel high. Euphoria occurs at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond this and the main treatment goal is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do offer a small amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and this is encouraged.
