Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Old Town, ME.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Old Town which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
