Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Phillips, ME.

There are recovery programs offered in or near Phillips that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will ideally no longer engage in addict behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time making them feel high. Euphoria can be experienced at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond this and the primary treatment objective is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do offer a limited amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary treatment, and it is recommended and encouraged.
