American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require recovery services for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. On the Contrary, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions show up to rehab as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely accepted a court ordered diversion program to receive treatment in lieu of jail time. So as one can see, there is an absolute need for a variety of service types to provide services for all of the various needs of this client demographic, including addiction treatment programs in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Roxbury face is access to comprehensive services, particularly those who reside in rural areas. Programs offering drug and alcohol rehabilitation services in rural regions may not be set up to provide strategic planning intended for the needs and demands of this unique group of people including substance abuse treatment services in their language. American Indian and Alaska Native clients can work with stakeholders and elders working in mental health services for their region or tribe to figure out which types of treatment services are an option for them through which treatment facilities, and which will be most effective for their scenario. There have been many grants offered in recent years to cover these types of treatment services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effectively established treatment programs which offer evidence based treatment that also integrates culturally sensitive treatment services delivered in their language which are provided by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
