Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Sedgwick, ME.

There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Sedgwick that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid dependent client will instead not engage in drug seeking behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications consistently so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also making them feel high. Euphoria occurs at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment objective is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do deliver a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and this is encouraged.
