Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Sinclair, ME.

There are programs offered in or near Sinclair which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are administered in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors that cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid dependent client will ideally not become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment objective is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some clinics do offer a small amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary services, and this is encouraged.
