Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Spruce Head, ME.

There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Spruce Head which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are administered in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same nerve cell receptors that cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid addicted client will ideally no longer become involved in addict behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't at the same time making them feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment goal is to manage the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do provide a small amount of counseling and therapy as secondary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
