Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - West Kennebunk, ME.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in West Kennebunk that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
