Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Wilton, ME.

There are addiction programs available in or near Wilton which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opioid dependent client will ideally not engage in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications consistently so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't at the same time making them feel high. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond this and the primary treatment goal is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do offer a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary services, and this is encouraged.
