Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Allouez, MI.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Allouez which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
