Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Columbus, MI.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Columbus which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
