Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - East China, MI.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in East China which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
