There are addiction programs available in or near Grand Ledge that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications which are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate addicted client will ideally no longer engage in addict behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time causing them to feel high. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment goal is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some clinics do offer a small amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary services, and this is encouraged.
