Mental health treatment is an important component of the treatment of drug & alcohol abuse disorders, due to the fact that many individuals with an addiction disorder also suffer with a co-occurring mental health issue. The need for dual diagnosis treatment has become increasingly evident over the last few years, and many rehab centers in Hope now offer dual diagnosis treatment as part of a broader spectrum of services in addition to conventional and more progressive rehabilitation methods.
In many cases, mental health treatment starts with the initial diagnosis of an individual's disorder, particularly when addiction is present. Often, the person doesn't initially even know they have an anxiety disorder or are suffering with depression until it is discovered in a mental health physician's office or treatment facility. Once diagnosed, steps can be put forth to help the client resolve issues and become more stable, and this might include the use of certain psychotherapies, counseling, and possibly medication administration or cessation of medication. In many cases however, people suffering with a dual diagnosis are self-medicating with drugs and alcohol or perhaps abusing or misusing their medications. In these circumstances, rehab staff and mental health practitioners can determine medication records and propose steps which can be put forth to eliminate the need for medication. Patients can be safely weaned off of medications which are doing more harm than good, or those which they are inclined to misuse.
