Mental health treatment is an essential component of the treatment of drug & alcohol abuse disorders, because a significantly large number of individuals with an addiction disorder struggle with a co-occurring mental health issue. The need for dual diagnosis treatment has become more and more evident over the last few years, and many rehabilitation programs in Riga now offer dual diagnosis treatment as part of a broader spectrum of services together with conventional and more progressive rehabilitation methods.
In many cases, mental health treatment involves the initial diagnosis of the person's mental health issue, especially when addiction is present. Oftentimes, the person doesn't even realize they have an anxiety disorder or are suffering with depression until it is discovered in a mental health physician's office or treatment facility. Once diagnosed, actions can be taken to help the person resolve issues and become more stable, and this can involve the use of specific psychotherapies, counseling, and possibly medication administration or cessation of medication. In many instances however, clients struggling with a dual diagnosis are self-medicating with drugs and alcohol or possibly abusing or misusing their medications. In these instances, professional staff and medical specialists can review medication histories and recommend actions which can be taken to get rid of the need for medication. People can be harmlessly weaned off of medications which are doing more harm than good, or those which they are inclined to misuse.
