Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Sumner, MI.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Sumner which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug-free life you want.
