American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require treatment for substance abuse and addiction. On the Contrary, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more prone to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions show up to rehab as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely agreed to a diversion option to receive treatment instead of jail time. So as one can see, there is an absolute need for a variety of service types to cover all of the very unique needs of this client demographic, including substance abuse treatment services in native languages.
