American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need rehabilitation for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions show up to rehab as criminal justice clients, meaning they have very likely accepted a court ordered diversion program to receive rehab instead of jail times for their charges. So as one can see, there is definitely a need for different types of treatment programs to provide services for all of the various needs of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including substance abuse treatment services in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Brooklyn Center face is access to comprehensive and effective services, especially those who live in rural locations. Facilities providing addiction rehabilitation services in rural areas may not be capable of offering strategic planning intended for the needs of this distinctive demographic including substance abuse treatment services in their native language.
