Smoking Allowed in Designated Area - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Cleveland, MN.

It is estimated that around 75% of clients at residential rehab centers for drug addiction and alcoholism are smokers. While it is true that nicotine is addicting and clients in any sort of treatment for addiction should strive to be abstinent from all addictive substances, this can present problems that make enforcing a smoking ban outweigh the benefits of such restrictions. A person who is addicted to a substance that could very well kill them immediately might not agree to get help if they must quit smoking cigarettes, so many programs in Cleveland allow smoking with some limitations, restrictions and in designated areas of their facility.

Some rehab centers permit clients to smoke anywhere, as long as it is outside for example. Some facilities have a designated smoking area, which is the only place that clients are allowed to smoke in. Because nicotine is addictive, even treatment programs that have a designated area and allow smoking typically provide alternatives to smoking if the client would like to consider this as an option, such as nicotine replacement gum, patches and prescriptions. There are also programs which allow smoking in designated areas, but provide education on the health risks associated with smoking by including this into their program either by way of direct one on one counseling or by providing educational literature for clients to examine. In programs which allow smoking in designated areas this is typically only approved for clients, whereas staff are often banned from smoking at the center or are encouraged to not smoke in front of clients.

Publicly funded drug rehabilitation facilities are obligated by the rules and restrictions in regards to smoking that are imposed by state and federal agencies which oversee and administer these programs. Private rehab facilities have a little more tolerance and don't have as many rules imposed on them, so may be more likely to offer designated areas for smoking.
