DWI clients in treatment need to complete specific requirements to satisfy the terms of their court sentencing. Drug and Alcohol Education is a fundamental tool used at rehabs treating DWI offenders. There are different levels of alcohol education which can vary by state. Level I education classes normally consist of 12 hours of education related to the effects of alcohol and drugs. This is the what someone with a first conviction or someone under 21 will usually be required to complete. Level II courses would include both education and therapy in a court approved program. How long a person will have to remain in therapy depends on various factors, which can be, for example, how many DWI's the person has had, and the seriousness of the violation. Ordinarily, clients will be required to take the Level II DWI classes and therapy unless their blood-alcohol level was very low when they were stopped and there were no other significant charges when the offender was arrested.
