American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require treatment for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to seek treatment on their own will more than other racial/ethnic groups. Nearly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions show up to treatment as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely accepted a court ordered diversion program to go to rehab instead of jail time. So therefore, there is an absolute need for a variety of service types to provide services for all of the various needs of this client demographic, including addiction treatment programs in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Landfall face is access to comprehensive and effective services, particularly those who reside in rural regions. Programs providing addiction rehabilitation services in rural regions often are not capable of offering support intended for the needs of this distinctive group of people including substance abuse treatment services in their native language. American Indian and Alaska Native individuals can work with stakeholders and elders involved in mental health services for their tribe or region to figure out which services are available to them through which facilities, and which will best suit their needs. There have been numerous grants approved in recent years to help pay for these types of treatment services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effectively established programs which provide evidence based treatment that also incorporates culturally sensitive rehab services including those in their language which are performed by bi-lingual staff members.
