American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need treatment for substance abuse and addiction. On the Contrary, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions arrive to treatment as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely agreed to a court ordered diversion program to receive treatment in lieu of jail times for their charges.
