Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Dawn, MO.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Dawn that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
