There are recovery programs offered in or near East Prairie that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same nerve cell receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate addicted client will instead not engage in addict behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria occurs at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond this and the main treatment goal is to treat the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do provide a small amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and this is encouraged.
