Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Elmer, MO.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in Elmer which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
