Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Huntsville, MO.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Huntsville that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
