There are addiction programs offered in or near Iberia which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are administered in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors that cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate addicted client will instead not engage in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel high. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment objective is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do provide a small amount of counseling and group therapy as auxiliary treatment, and this is encouraged.
