It is a known fact that people in rehabilitation for substance abuse are more likely to smoke tobacco, 75 percent in fact. As such few programs address the situation as a primary addiction, even though the fact that helping clients quit smoking during rehab is associated with a 25 percent greater chance the client will remain sober from drugs and alcohol. As a result, there are 'smoking not allowed' drug treatment programs in Mexico that enforce a smoking ban and most of them also provide nicotine addiction treatment.
While total bans on smoking are not the norm, an increasing number of programs are beginning to enforce their own bans, but also state and local tobacco-free workplace mandates attempt to make rehabs completely smoke-free environments. In doing so, these mandates avoid the need to develop and enforce facility policies that are already legally in place and enforced legally by state and local agencies. Enforcing a complete smoking ban may deter potential clients who smoke starting treatment. At the same time it will help those who do choose a no smoking alcohol and/or drug addiction rehab program be better able to recover in a completely drug and addiction free environment.
