Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Paris, MO.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Paris which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build the sober life you want.
