Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Parma, MO.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Parma which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
